RIVERWALK LENDS GREAT CHARM TO SAN ANTONIO

Story by Lynn Pribus and photo by Glenn Pribus

We recently returned to San Antonio, many years after Glenn was stationed there with the Air Force. From our concierge-level eerie atop La Cantera Resort—an elegant hilltop resort with two 18-hole golf courses, six pools and full spa services—we had a wonderful view of the city to the south. “A WHOLE lot better from my old barracks,” he pronounced with immense understatement.

A highlight of our visit was Paseo del Rio—a.k.a. the Riverwalk. It’s a stair-flight below street level and visitors can stroll along the river for about two miles, enjoying shops, scenery and various eateries.

A 35-minute Rio San Antonio Cruise introduced us to the Paseo. Our “captain” explained this is actually on a floodgate-protected loop off the San Antonio River. Later, we strolled along the river to the historic arts village of La Villita with its engaging galleries, restaurants and upscale shops.

By day, these boats tour the Riverwalk.
At night, they become floating restaurants

We also chose our dinner restaurant—Casa Rio—and returned early enough to ensure a river table under a bright umbrella. We sipped our Coronas, shared tortilla chips with panhandling ducks and simply watched the amazing mix of people going by on land and water.

Especially charming were the dinner boats where service ranged from white tablecloths with crystal goblets to vivid Mexican fabrics and pottery. Charters seat up to 20 diners and individuals may also enjoy meals afloat through a couple dozen restaurants and several hotels.

We were so charmed by the atmosphere that we dawdled shamelessly over our cerveza, enchiladas and empanadas, watching the lights come on as the sunset faded and the Paseo took on a whole new personality.
