Glorietta Bay Inn Transports You Back in Time
Story by Sydney Blue
One block from the beach, the historic mansion Glorietta Bay Inn takes you back in time with rich woods, chandeliers, pillars in Italian Renaissance style and rooms full of orchids.
Room 108 let me feel history. The extra tall French doors opened to a courtyard singing with a streaming fountain. The glass cabinets in the -Butler’s Pantry reminded me of my grandmother’s kitchen, and the bedroom with inside pillars, antique furniture and a bottle of milk with cookies awoke my imagination. How lovely to float back to this sweet bygone age.
In 1906, John Dietrick Spreckels commissioned his dream home to be built right on Coronado Island, with views of Glorietta Bay. Spreckels helped San Diego grow and prosper. Son of the sugar magnate Claus Spreckels, John fell in love with Coronado Island and helped develop the Hotel del Coronado, the library, parks and more.
Stay in the historic mansion, not the newer rooms, for that old-time feel. The penthouse suites offer panoramic views of the ocean and radiating sunshine.
Charming little touches include lemonade and gingersnaps in the afternoon, complimentary continental breakfast spreads, free internet access and refrigerators in every room. More than 60% of their business comes from repeat guests and referrals, and they’ve won awards, such as Best Boutique Hotel. It’s a great place to touch down for a night or two.
