A Wonderful Wilderness Retreat South of the Border

By Lynn and Glenn Pribus

For tranquility and solitude, consider one of our favorite places: Las Animas Wilderness Retreat in Baja (Animas translates to souls or spirits).

Fly into Bahia de Los Angeles, where a military guard protects your parked plane 24/7, or fly from San Diego with Baja AirVentures’ experienced commercial pilots. Guests are ferried to Las Animas in a sturdy boat with occasional pauses for whale watching.

Las Animas is a “green” resort with inviting yurts sprinkled on a long, curving sand beach. Hearty Mexican-style meals are served up in a central yurt, which serves as dining room, library and cantina.

Guests hike, snorkel, fish, sail, go beach-combing or star-gazing. We loved kayaking each day at dawn. Once, everyone even went to a nearby sea lion colony where the young creatures cavorted mischievously around us.

If you’ve been wary of requirements for flying into Mexico, this could be a valuable "how-to" trip. Kevin, the resort owner, speaks fluent Spanish and knows all about Baja flying: what to do when immigration isn’t around, where fuel’s available and how to interact with the “Federales.”

Baja AirVentures offers all-inclusive packages as well.
